Welcome to the official website of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain®
Since 1979, Betty Edwards’s book, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain®, has enabled millions of people around the world to learn to draw. In this welcome message, we introduce you to her teaching method, some of the theory behind it, and an exercise that demonstrates its effectiveness.
Dr. Edwards’s drawing lessons are available on DVD, which is included as part of her "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain® Artist's Portfolio.” The Portfolio contains all of the materials, tools, and instruction you will need to learn to draw in the comfort of your own home, or, if you are a teacher, to use in the classroom as a basis for effective teaching and learning. Visit the DRSB Store to see all our products.
On this website, you can view some of the amazing "Before and After" drawings, created by individuals from many backgrounds and fields. Most had never before been able to draw, but in only five days. they gained confidence, insight, and skill by participating in one of our DRSB Workshops. Just as people all over the world have used Betty Edwards' methods to learn to draw, you can, too!

The painting above is a student’s copy of a still-life painting by the French artist Henri Matisse. The Matisse painting provides wonderful practice in mixing colors using the basic set of acrylic pigments and painting tools that I provide for each student. The instruction in this class begins with exercises that help you gain new-found understanding of Hue, Value, and Intensity, the three dimensions of color. This understanding will help you achieve artistic confidence in using and mixing colors.
